In tempi passati c’è stata, a mio personale avviso, una sola opera in grado di competere a questa formidabile raccolta dedicata al Punk, ovvero il superlativo box della ORK Records dedicato a New York che su due CD racchiudeva perle inestimabili di una stagione significativa per la musica Punk dell’epoca, pur col “limite” geografico di cui al titolo.
Oggi la Cherry Red Records, label inglese specializzata in ristampe riesce a fare meglio, mettendo in fila su cinque CD 130 pezzi che, in buona parte, hanno fatto la storia della scena americana e canadese raccogliendoli in un box set destinato ad entrare a breve nelle discografie di tutti coloro che hanno avuto modo di apprezzare l’importante fiammata che alcuni gruppi e musicisti sono riusciti a dare, caratterizzando un periodo dal quale sono usciti nomi poi entrati nella storia della musica.
Come tutte le raccolte potrà forse mancare qualcosa, ma il lavoro fatto mi pare certosino e di grandissimo pregio, andando a proporre canzoni fondamentali all’interno della scena che si sarebbe sviluppata. L’importanza del Punk Rock è figlia di un periodo in cui la scena internazionale era preda delle pulsioni disco/dance da una parte, che avrebbero fatto perfino capolino in alcuni dischi di gruppi al di sopra delle mode (ve li ricordate gli Stones di cose alla Emotional Rescue? ma ci sono fior di esempi che credo non abbiate dimenticato), fino alla definitiva abdicazione con l’arrivo della febbre del sabato sera portata dai Bee Gees, che si espanse a livello pandemico ovunque nel mondo.
Dall’altra parte il rock e annessi ripiegava su se stesso, incapace in molti gruppi di comprendere che questa scossa sarebbe stata salutare. In Italia poi il panorama musicale era ancor più ristretto, quando non confuso. D’altronde allora non esisteva la possibilità di informarsi che viviamo adesso, e certe etichette venivano distribuite in maniera discutibile. Celebre la definizione che Ciao 2001 che nel 1974 definì come Punk Edoardo Bennato. Le cose cambieranno dal 1977 in poi, quando l’avvento di band come Sex Pistols faranno scoprire a molti un mondo che già aveva qualche anno, almeno negli States. E questo sarà anche merito di riviste come Il Mucchio Selvaggio, Rockerilla e tutta una serie di appassionati che si diedero da fare perchè si accendesse la luce su tutto ciò.
Il fenomeno ebbe vita breve, prendendo poi strade diverse, ma la scintilla era scoccata ed è importante poter riannodare le fila di un passato che ha portato sui piatti dell’epoca band come Television, Devo, Pere Ubu, The Ramones, i Db’s di Chris Stamey, Modern Lovers, Germs, Cramps, Dead Boys, Suburbs, The Feelies, Wall of Voodoo, X, Dead Kennedys, Flash Eaters, Destroy All Monsters e Replacements. E mi limito ad una citazione molto parziale perchè questo box vede presenti una marea incredibile di nomi, e molti sono anche quelli meno noti se non sconosciuti, almeno a me in qualche caso.
Ed è questa commistione di nomi così diversi, accomunati nello spirito musicale a dare ancor maggior pregio a quest’opera che presenta all’interno la scheda di ogni band o musicista presente nella raccolta. Un opera fondamentale per chi vuole recuperare un periodo della propria gioventù, ma anche per chi ha nella curiosità una delle caratteristiche fondamentali del proprio essere.
